Blog #1: Holistic Approach in Skincare

If one day you would google "holistic skincare", you may find that it is organic or biological cosmetics. In my opinion that is not correct and needs some explanation.

First of all, let's have a look at what does holistic mean according to Cambridge Dictionary.

  •  "HOLISTIC: dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part"
    or
  • "Holistic medicine: attempts to treat the whole person, including mind and body, not just the injury or disease"

As a result an holistic approach in skincare means to treat your body, mind and spirit as “connected” parts.

And let me explain to you why...

Our skin is the largest organ of the body. It works as a barrier between the inside and the outside world and every day it is affected by both sides. And that means that we must take into consideration your:

  • Body (digestion, hormones, medications and etc),
  • Mind (brains and your psychological state)
  • Lifestyle (work, physical activity, sleep habits and etc)
  • Environment (climate, pollution, country and etc)

There are 2 ways of treating your skin:

First one, the “Traditional way”:
There is a symptom and we need to remove it.
Some examples: for pimples --> an antibacterial pill or hormonal pill, for pigmentation --> bleaching products or laser; for blackhead --> extractions; for dry skin --> oil.
Unfortunately, this way can be aggressive, can have side effects and there's a chance that the problem will come back.

Second one, the “Holistic way”:
First of all we need to find the reason, why does your skin have this problem and react like this.
As soon as we found the reason, our goal is to eliminate the causes of the disease. Then we need to bring everything into balance and this problem shouldn't come back.

However, you must be ready that this approach takes longer time and the reason may be in your stomach or your stress (like it was with me. I will tell my story later), but it is a much healthier way and has a long-lasting result.

I personally believe in a Holistic Skin Care approach and practice it in my treatments. Nowadays, I found more and more scientific articles that proofs connections between skin and other body organs or the influence of stress on us and pollution (and more). About all the aspects I will speak later and more into details.

So it is up to you to decide which approach is closer to you, but don't forget, please, that our skin is a reflection of all what is going on with us and it works accordingly to our life choices.

With love,
Kristina Decourt
